Structural Engineering Consultancy in India

India-based structural engineering consultancy headquartered in Calicut (Kozhikode), Kerala — delivering IS code-compliant structural design for residential, commercial, and industrial projects across all Indian states since 2014.

India's Leading Structural Engineering Codes

Structural engineering in India is governed by a comprehensive suite of Indian Standard (IS) codes published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and coordinated by the National Building Code of India 2016 (NBC 2016). Every structural consultancy project in India requires compliance with the following core codes:

  • IS 456:2000 — Plain and Reinforced Concrete. The primary code for RCC design in India, covering beam, column, slab, and footing design using limit state method (LSM). Updated with Amendment No. 3 for revised safety factors.
  • IS 800:2007 — Steel Structures. Limit state design of hot-rolled steel structures — beams, columns, trusses, and connections. Updated in 2007 from the earlier working stress method to align with international limit state practice.
  • IS 1893:2016 — Earthquake-Resistant Design. Seismic zone map (Zones II–V), base shear calculation, response spectrum method, ductility requirements, and soil classification for spectral acceleration. IS 1893:2016 is the 6th revision and incorporates changes from the 2001 Bhuj earthquake learnings.
  • IS 13920:2016 — Ductile Design and Detailing. Mandatory in seismic Zone III and above. Covers beam-column joint reinforcement, confinement stirrups, lap splice restrictions, and soft-storey prevention requirements.
  • IS 875 (Parts 1–5) — Design Loads. Dead loads (Part 1), imposed/live loads (Part 2), wind loads (Part 3 — major update in 2015), snow loads (Part 4), and special loads (Part 5). Part 3 wind load provisions are significantly more detailed than earlier editions and require wind zone, terrain category, and topography factor determination.
  • IS 2911 — Foundation Design. Pile design for driven and bored piles, including pile capacity by both static and dynamic methods, group effects, and lateral load design.
  • IS 1904 / IS 6403 — Shallow Foundation Design. Spread footing and raft foundation bearing capacity and settlement calculations.

Seismic Zones Across India

IS 1893:2016 divides India into four seismic zones, each with a Zone Factor (Z) that determines the design base shear. Understanding your project's seismic zone is the first step in structural design:

  • Zone V (Z = 0.36) — Highest hazard. Himalayan belt (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, J&K), Northeast India (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim), Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Mandatory IS 13920 ductile detailing.
  • Zone IV (Z = 0.24) — High hazard. Delhi NCR, parts of Jammu, northern Bihar (Muzzafarpur, Patna), parts of Gujarat (Kutch fringe). Full ductile detailing required.
  • Zone III (Z = 0.16) — Moderate hazard. Kerala (including Kozhikode/Calicut), Maharashtra (Mumbai, Pune), Karnataka (Bangalore), Telangana (Hyderabad), Andhra Pradesh (Vijayawada), Rajasthan, and parts of Gujarat. IS 13920 ductile detailing mandatory.
  • Zone II (Z = 0.10) — Low hazard. Tamil Nadu interior (Chennai is Zone III), most of the Deccan Plateau, parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Simplified seismic design permitted for regular buildings under 12m.

For projects in Zone III and above — which includes all of Kerala, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Delhi — IS 1893:2016 seismic analysis and IS 13920:2016 ductile detailing are mandatory for all buildings over one storey. We prepare full seismic analysis documentation for every zone III/IV/V project we handle.

Why Choose a Kozhikode-Based Structural Consultant?

Kozhikode (Calicut) is one of South India's most commercially active cities and has historically been a hub for professional services, trade, and international business. Our base in Kozhikode gives us specific advantages for Indian clients:

  • Time-zone alignment — IST (India Standard Time) across all communications. No offshore delays or overnight gaps. When you call or email at 10am, you reach the engineer directly.
  • IS code expertise — Our primary design experience for Indian projects uses IS 456:2000, IS 800:2007, IS 1893:2016, and IS 13920:2016. These are not secondary competencies — they are the codes we apply routinely for the majority of our domestic India caseload.
  • NRI and Gulf diaspora connection — A large proportion of our Indian client base are NRI and Gulf-based clients building residential or commercial properties in Kerala or other states. We understand the specific documentation needs, the timeline constraints of Gulf-based clients, and the requirement to co-ordinate with local contractor teams. See our NRI structural engineering guide →
  • International experience applied locally — Having designed structures to ASCE-7, SBC, NBC, JIS, and Eurocode, we bring international structural engineering best practice to Indian projects. Our Indian clients benefit from exposure to how the same problems are solved differently in different codebook environments.

IS Code Compliance and Documentation

Every structural engineering deliverable we produce for Indian projects is IS code-compliant, with explicit code citations throughout the calculation package. Our documentation standard for Indian projects includes:

  • Design basis statement: applicable IS codes, edition, seismic zone, wind zone, soil type, material grades
  • Load derivation per IS 875 Parts 1–3: dead loads, live loads, wind loads — with NBC 2016 occupancy-based live load selection
  • Seismic analysis per IS 1893:2016: zone factor, importance factor, response reduction factor, base shear calculation or response spectrum analysis
  • Structural member design with IS 456:2000 (RCC) or IS 800:2007 (steel): capacity checks with explicit IS clause references
  • Foundation design with soil report-calibrated bearing capacity and IS 1904 / IS 2911 reference
  • Structural drawings: plan, elevation, section, reinforcement details, bar bending schedules

Our deliverables are ready for submission to local municipal authorities (Panchayat, Corporation, Development Authority) and for review by the Structural Auditor where required by Kerala or other state rules.

India is our home market. Sixteens Consultancy Services was founded in India in 2014. Every IS code, every municipal process, and every contractor relationship we describe is grounded in twelve years of practice on Indian soil — not theoretical knowledge of a foreign market.

Frequently Asked Questions — India Structural Engineering

Which IS codes govern structural engineering in India?

The primary codes are IS 456:2000 (RCC), IS 800:2007 (steel), IS 1893:2016 (seismic), IS 875 Parts 1–5 (loads), IS 13920:2016 (ductile detailing), and IS 2911 (piles). NBC 2016 coordinates these into a national framework.

Can a Kerala-based structural consultant design for projects in other Indian states?

Yes — structural engineering in India uses national BIS codes applicable everywhere. We serve clients in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Delhi NCR, Gujarat, and Rajasthan from our Kozhikode base.

What seismic zone is applicable to my Indian project?

Depends on location: Zone V (Himalayan belt, Northeast India), Zone IV (Delhi, parts of Gujarat), Zone III (Kerala, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad), or Zone II (low-hazard areas). We identify the correct zone and derive all seismic design parameters as part of every India project scope.

How does the remote engagement process work for India projects?

You share architectural drawings, soil report, site location, and project brief. We deliver structural drawings and calculations within agreed timeline. For Kerala projects we can also visit the site. For projects outside Kerala, we coordinate with your local liaison engineer for municipal submission if needed.

What are your fees for structural engineering in India?

Fees depend on project size, structure type, and complexity. For a typical residential villa (G+2, 250–400 sqm), the complete structural package (design, drawings, bar bending schedules) ranges from ₹20,000–₹60,000. Commercial multi-storey projects and industrial structures are quoted individually. Contact us with your project scope for a specific fee estimate.
