Structural Engineering in the UAE

The UAE is one of the world's most dynamic construction markets, with structural engineering requirements governed by both Eurocode and AISC-based approaches. We have delivered PEB commercial structures in the UAE, designed to EN/Eurocode standards.

UAE Construction Market

The United Arab Emirates — particularly Dubai and Abu Dhabi — has one of the world's most active and ambitious construction sectors. Iconic commercial towers, large-span retail and hospitality structures, industrial and logistics facilities, and infrastructure projects all require structural engineering expertise. The UAE market is distinctive in accepting both Eurocode and American (AISC/ACI/ASCE) standards, reflecting the diversity of international engineering firms and construction companies operating in the country.

Applicable Standards in the UAE

Dubai Municipality and Abu Dhabi Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities both accept structural designs prepared to Eurocode or American standards, with the relevant National Annex or equivalent applied. For Eurocode designs, the UAE National Annexes specify locally applicable parameters including reference wind velocities for Gulf region climatology, seismic hazard values (low-to-moderate for most UAE locations), and concrete durability requirements for the aggressive marine and sulfate-rich ground environment. Our UAE hypermarket PEB project was designed to Eurocode with the UAE National Annex applied — producing a documentation package that satisfied the relevant authority review process.

Pre-Engineered Buildings in the UAE

Pre-engineered steel buildings (PEB) are extensively used for industrial, logistics, and commercial retail construction in the UAE. The economic and scheduling advantages of PEB — reduced steel tonnage from tapered member optimisation, factory fabrication, rapid erection — are particularly valued in the UAE's fast-moving construction environment where project timelines are often compressed and cost efficiency is a primary driver. We design PEB primary frames and their connections using Eurocode EN 1993 or AISC 360 depending on the client's preference and the authority's accepted standards.

Gulf Environmental Conditions

Structural design in the UAE must address the aggressive Gulf environment: high ambient temperatures (up to 50°C in summer, creating thermal expansion demands on long structural spans), salt-laden atmosphere (promoting corrosion of unprotected steel), sulfate-rich soils and groundwater (requiring sulfate-resistant concrete and protected reinforcement), and occasional sandstorms that impose dynamic wind loads on exposed structures. Corrosion protection specifications for UAE structural steel typically include hot-dip galvanising or high-performance epoxy/polyurethane coating systems, with regular maintenance inspection schedules documented in the design report.

Engaging Us for UAE Projects

We provide structural design services for UAE projects to Eurocode or AISC standards as required by the project authority. Our experience with the UAE hypermarket PEB project covers the full design and documentation scope, from structural system selection through foundation design and authority submission preparation.
