Structural Documentation for UK Building Control
UK Building Control submissions under Building Regulations Approved Document A require structural calculations that are transparent, fully code-referenced, and structured to allow an independent reviewer to follow the design logic. The calculation package must demonstrate compliance with Requirements A1 (Loading), A2 (Ground movement), and A3 (Disproportionate collapse) for buildings within the scope of Building Regulations for England and Wales, with equivalent requirements under the Scottish Technical Handbook for Scotland and Northern Ireland Technical Booklet D for Northern Ireland.
Sixteens Consultancy Services produces UK-format structural calculation packages as part of our UK structural design service. The technical framework — BS EN 1993 with UK National Annex for steel, BS EN 1992 with UK NA for concrete, BS EN 1990 for load combinations — is the same Eurocode framework we demonstrated competency in through the UAE hypermarket PEB. SCS has not delivered a project in the UK — we state this — and our UK calculation packages are reviewed by a UK-registered MIStructE or CEng structural engineer before building control submission.
Structure of a UK Structural Calculation Package
SCS UK calculation packages are organised to UK building control expectations:
- Design basis statement — Project description, Building Regulations requirements addressed (A1, A2, A3), applicable Eurocodes and UK National Annexes cited, occupancy classification, Consequence Class for disproportionate collapse assessment, fire strategy reference (for information only — fire design is a separate Engineering stream), and ground investigation reference.
- Loading calculations — Permanent actions (self-weight from BS EN 1991-1-1 Table A.1), variable actions (imposed loads from BS EN 1991-1-1 Table 6.2 for the applicable occupancy category), wind actions from BS EN 1991-1-4 with UK NA (including UK wind velocity map reference, terrain roughness and topography factors, and peak velocity pressure qp computation), and load combinations per BS EN 1990 Equation 6.10 or 6.10a/6.10b with UK NA ψ factors.
- Structural analysis — STAAD.Pro or ETABS model summary, frame analysis results, and key reactions. For simple structures, hand calculations using standard load distribution methods with reference to SCI or TRADA guides may be used.
- Member design checks — BS EN 1993-1-1 section classification (compact/Class 1-2 or non-compact/Class 3-4), member resistance in bending (Mcrd or Mb,Rd for LTB), shear (Vpl,Rd), compression (Nb,Rd), and interaction checks for combined loading.
- Disproportionate collapse assessment — Per Building Regulations Part A Requirement A3 and BS EN 1991-1-7. Consequence Class identification and horizontal/vertical tying verification (for CC2A) or key element identification (for CC2B/CC3).
- Foundation assessment — Bearing capacity and settlement assessment per BS EN 1997-1 with UK NA, or reference to site investigation report and designer's assessment.
SCS Eurocode Documentation Competency
The UAE hypermarket PEB calculation package followed the same Eurocode documentation structure that UK building control expects: EN 1991-1-1 loading, EN 1991-1-4 wind actions, EN 1990 load combinations (Equation 6.10), EN 1993-1-1 member resistance checks, and EN 1993-1-8 connection design — all with explicit code clause references throughout. The UK NA differences are limited to specific factor values and wind map references; the calculation structure is identical. SCS calculation packages for UK clients are structured to UK building control expectations from the start.
How to Engage SCS for Design Reports in the UK
Email [email protected] with: project location (England/Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland — determines which national annex applies), structure type and Consequence Class, any specific building control authority requirements, your UK reviewing structural engineer's requirements for report format, and target building control submission date. Mubashir responds within one business day. WhatsApp at +974 6004 4913. Deliverables: PDF calculation package with design basis, Eurocode-cited load calculations, member design checks, disproportionate collapse assessment, foundation check — structured for UK building control review and CE-signed submission by your UK engineer.
