Eurocode Structural Design for UAE Projects
The UAE structural engineering market is one of the most internationally diverse in the world, reflecting the wide range of international consultants, contractors, and clients active in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. European-origin firms, European main contractors, and European-manufactured steel supply chains mean that Eurocode — specifically EN 1993 for steel and EN 1992 for concrete — is a routinely specified design framework for UAE projects alongside AISC 360. Structural consultants seeking UAE project work must be fluent in EN 1993, not merely aware of it.
Sixteens Consultancy Services has delivered a completed UAE project under EN 1993: the UAE hypermarket Pre-Engineered Building. This was not a demonstration project or an academic exercise — it was a client-instructed design for a large-span retail building where EN 1993-1-1 and EN 1993-1-8 were the required standards. The structure was built. Our Eurocode competency is demonstrated by the existence of this building.
Code Framework in the UAE — Eurocode Edition
For UAE projects specifying Eurocode, the applicable standard hierarchy is:
- EN 1990 + UAE/international NA — Basis of structural design. Establishes limit states (STR, GEO, EQU), design situations, and load combination rules. UAE practice typically applies EN 1990 Equation 6.10 for load combinations, using the partial factors in EN 1990 Annex A1 Table A1.2(B).
- EN 1991-1-1 — Self-weight and imposed loads. For UAE hypermarket and retail buildings, roof imposed load categories and crowd loading provisions from EN 1991-1-1 apply. SBS (single-storey) retail buildings have specific load patterns for maintenance and roof plant loading.
- EN 1991-1-4 — Wind actions. UAE coastal conditions produce high wind pressures. The UAE hypermarket project required careful determination of internal pressure coefficients (cpi) for partially open buildings with large roller doors — a common scenario in Gulf industrial and retail buildings that EN 1991-1-4 Section 7.2.9 specifically addresses.
- EN 1993-1-1 — General rules for steel member design. Section classification (Class 1–4) determines whether full plastic, elastic, or reduced capacity applies. For tapered portal frame columns and haunched rafters common in PEB construction, EN 1993-1-1 Section 6.3 lateral-torsional buckling provisions govern the design of the haunched rafter between the eaves and the ridge.
- EN 1993-1-3 — Cold-formed steel. Governs purlins and side rails in PEB secondary framing systems — cold-formed Z and C sections common in UAE industrial buildings.
- EN 1993-1-8 — Design of joints. Eaves haunch connections, column base plates, ridge apex connections, and purlin to rafter connections are all designed per EN 1993-1-8 component method, classifying each joint as rigid, semi-rigid, or nominally pinned for the global analysis model.
SCS Track Record — UAE Hypermarket PEB
The UAE hypermarket Pre-Engineered Building is the direct delivered reference for our UAE Eurocode work. The project comprised a large-span single-storey portal frame structure for a UAE retail hypermarket — a building type that requires optimised tapered column and haunch rafter sections for span efficiency, careful wind load determination for the Gulf exposure, and robust connection details at eaves and ridge for the moment-resisting portal frame action. EN 1993-1-1 member checks, EN 1993-1-3 purlin design, EN 1993-1-8 joint design, and EN 1991-1-4 wind actions were all applied and documented in the calculation package. The structure was completed and is in service.
